Hidden Candy Corn Cupcakes


I learned something today.  Which is,

 If you don't like random people talking to you and staring at you, don't go out in public with a kid dressed up like a mad scientist with white-dyed hair standing 6 inches out in all directions and freaky black eyebrows. 


Obviously.

 Right?


Next year I will pre-arrange my grocery shopping and other errands around children's Halloween parties and the need thereof for them to be dressed like freaks and thus the center of attention.

Don't get me wrong I love this holiday but strangers talking to me and watching me makes me nervous.  The little alert in my head says STRANGER DANGER- STRANGER DANGER.

Also it takes 45 minutes to grocery shop instead of 10 and I'm not great at small talk.


Since I'm pretty sure your kids won't get enough of a sugar high today I thought I'd make you some cupcakes.  You have to cut into the middle first though, for the surprise!

Hidden Candy Corn Cupcakes

-Chocolate cupcakes (Mine were from a box)
-Orange, yellow, and white Americolor food coloring gels
-Chocolate frosting (Half this recipe is plenty, or you can use a quicker chocolate frosting if you want)


Divide marshmallow buttercream frosting into 3 bowls and tint one orange, one yellow, and one white.  Put each colored frosting into it's own pastry bag with a round tip attached. 

Cut an inverted cone into each cupcake.  (You are basically hollowing it out just like you do for filling cupcakes, just be extra careful that this one is conical-shaped so it will look like an upside-down candy corn.)

Discard "cone" cake bits after you cut them out.

Fill the bottom of each hole with white frosting, then yellow, then orange.  To get extra "neat" candy corns- smooth each layer (especially the top layer) with a small offset spatula or exceptionally clean finger. 

Frost cupcake tops with chocolate frosting (a teensy bit will do ya!) and garnish with sprinkles or candy corn.

Encourage your guests to cut their cupcakes before eating.  They candy corn layer will stay more intact if the cupcake is frozen before cutting.
