I think my favorite thing about holidays is the sugar cookies that can be adapted for them. This is the same recipe I used for Firework Sugar Cookies and if you haven't tried it, you need to! They're sweet and satisfying and addictive.
I love this method of piping cookies with regular frosting. They turn out super cute and it's SO much easier than the royal icing/pipe & flood method.
Halloween Sugar Cookies
Use This cookie recipe. Follow directions for cut-out cookies and cut dough in the shape of gingerbread men, bats, candy corn, pumpkins, etc. This can be done the night before and cookies can be stored in an airtight container. You can even make them weeks in advance and freeze them.
Halloween Sugar Cookie Frosting
Use This frosting recipe. One batch will barely frost 24 medium sized cookies, otherwise double it and you can always save leftover frosting. I used 16.5 oz powdered sugar and 3Tbsp milk and then added my food coloring. Be careful not to add too much milk, especially before adding the food coloring, as that will moisten the frosting as well. You can always add more milk after tinting the frosting.
If you want your frosting to "melt into itself a bit" (ie: test tubes/black bat) add a little extra milk to those colors.
I use cake decorating bags & tips to decorate my cookies, but you can always use a knife and sprinkles if you want. Here is a list of the tips I used:
Flat tip- Wilton #45- for mummys
Small round tip- Wilton #4- for outlining bats or cats/and filling them in (water this frosting down a bit)
Large round tip- Wilton #12- for test tubes/pumpkins/ghosts
Star tip- Wilton #21- for candy corns. (do on an angle or straight, whichever you like better.)
For my bats and cats I frosted them with black frosting, then immediately pressed them into black
sanding sugar. For my test tubes I pressed the tops into Halloween sprinkles.
Just be creative!
You just made me excited for Christmas. The sugar cookies are my favorite part!
